As part of the Diputació de Barcelona’s Renovables 2030 programme, Viladecans has taken a step forward in sustainability with an ambitious project for renewable energy self-consumption. This initiative enables the municipality to achieve significant economic savings and a substantial reduction in CO₂ emissions.
Photovoltaic systems were deployed across a representative group of public facilities—schools, sports centres, markets, and municipal buildings. A total of 18 sites were managed, encompassing basic and executive projects, site management, legalisation, and Health & Safety Controls.
The basic and executive projects were drafted for nine photovoltaic installations located at: CEIP Marta Mata, CEIP Montserratina, Municipal Cemetery, EBM La Pineda, Montserratina Sports Centre, Pòdium Sports Centre, Atrium Theatre, Baseball Field, and Torre Roja Municipal Football Field. In parallel, site management was carried out for another nine facilities: Can Xic Library, Can Pastera Senior Citizens’ Centre, Can Batllori Cultural Centre, Municipal Market, Alba-Rosa Community Centre (headquarters of Alba-Rosa neighbourhood associations), Ponent Car Park, Can Calderon Economic Promotion Centre, Can Palmer Farmhouse, and Maintenance and Logistics. In total, 2,306 photovoltaic modules were designed, covering a total capture surface area of over 8,700 m².
The installations span a wide variety of buildings. At educational centres such as CEIP Marta Mata and CEIP Montserratina, 288 and 264 modules were installed respectively, each with capacities exceeding 110 kWp. At facilities such as the Atrium Theatre, photovoltaic and hybrid modules were combined, providing 88 kWp. Other installations included sports centres such as Montserratina and Pòdium, the Baseball Field, and the Municipal Cemetery. Among the projects with site management, highlights include the Can Xic Library, the Municipal Market, and the Ponent Car Park, the latter with 184 panels and nearly 70 kWp capacity.
The photovoltaic panels range between 380 and 450 Wp, selected based on roof type and available surface area. Each project was dimensioned to ensure maximum use of solar radiation while ensuring landscape integration and compatibility with the building’s use. In some cases, such as the Atrium Theatre, hybrid technologies were applied to optimise energy efficiency.
Thanks to all these initiatives, annual generation is expected to exceed 1.2 million kWh, representing a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and consolidating a more environmentally respectful energy model. Forecasts indicate an initial energy self-consumption rate of 30%, with the aim of progressively reaching 100%. In parallel, shared self-consumption is promoted in facilities such as the Municipal Market, which supplies energy to surrounding families and businesses, thus strengthening the local renewable energy ecosystem.
