The New Camp Nou, located in Barcelona’s Les Corts district, is part of the comprehensive transformation project Espai Barça. This redevelopment represents the most significant intervention since the stadium’s inauguration in 1957, with the aim of converting it into a leading European facility in terms of innovation, sustainability, and capacity. In addition to modernizing the structure, the project includes new services and complementary areas such as offices, a hotel, and retail spaces. In this context, the surrounding urban development plays a key role in ensuring the functionality and integration of the stadium with its urban environment. The project is committed to sustainability and remote management of services, using automated systems and smart technology to optimize resources and enhance user experience.
Nikken Sekkei, in collaboration with Pascual i Ausió Arquitectes, was the winner of the 2016 international competition promoted by Futbol Club Barcelona for the design of the new Camp Nou. Nikken Sekkei collaborated on the external urban development with Espinàs i Tarrasó S.C.P., who in turn partnered with Esitec to design all technical installations. This set of installations is designed to ensure full functionality and safety of the space, as well as its integration with the other phases of Espai Barça.
The project includes separate sewer and drainage networks, a rainwater collection system with specialized channels and grates, electrical installations via four supply panels, and public lighting with poles and high-efficiency LED luminaires. It also incorporates telecommunications and data systems, fire protection, sectorized drip irrigation systems, and a lightning protection network.
The wastewater and rainwater network follows a separate gravity-fed system. It uses SN4 PVC pipes with diameters ranging from 110 mm to 630 mm, connected through prefabricated manholes and inspection chambers. Drain inlets are fitted with “Barcelona P7” grates adapted to heavy traffic. For surface drainage, prefabricated polymer channels (up to 30 × 30 cm) are installed, connected to a 500 mm external collector, ensuring efficient rainwater evacuation. The entire system is connected at four points to the existing municipal network.
Regarding lighting and electrical supply, four outdoor electrical panels are installed to power the lighting and auxiliary services. Each panel includes regulatory protections and anticipates future services. Lighting is provided by IP65/IK08 LED poles with a 3,000 K color temperature for pedestrian areas. The system is integrated with the BMS via point-to-point remote control and astronomical timers, allowing light adjustments according to schedule and usage. Thus, the urban lighting installation is fully autonomous and reconfigurable.
The drip irrigation system is divided into three sectors with master valves equipped with 300 µ filters — to facilitate cleaning — and flow meters. Drippers (2.3 l/h and 3.5 l/h) are installed with variable spacing depending on vegetation. The system is managed via BACnet IP and linked to the BMS, which regulates irrigation based on soil moisture and weather conditions to optimize resource use and ensure efficiency and sustainability.
In addition, BIM Revit MEP is used to provide a complete and intuitive digital representation of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems within a unified 3D model. This allows engineers and architects to clearly visualize each component, detect interferences, and correct deviations before the construction phase. This usability minimizes design errors and enhances coordination between disciplines, and Esitec uses it to reliably design and plan the installations of the new Camp Nou, ensuring precise and efficient execution.
